Conflicting Priorities
Written by Mannaz
Friday, 06 June 2008

Working in needle exchange can be psychologically a difficult job for some people, but attending an exchange is also a difficult situation for our clients.

In this article I’ll be looking at the roles of conflicting priorities for injectors and how they may impact on the effectiveness of any harm reduction advice given. I’ll also look at the conflicting priorities for the staff.

Outreach Exchange
Written by Mannaz
Tuesday, 06 May 2008

For most of us when we think of a needle exchange we picture either a pharmacy exchange where someone is given pins and very little else (including information in a lot of cases) or a static site exchange where someone is given a fuller intervention in a nice warm building.

But for services that run street outreach there are other options. This article is about an exchange we did with a heroin injector and the advantages it had both to the user and to the service.

Increasing Returns
Written by Mannaz
Saturday, 05 April 2008

OK let’s get one thing straight before we start. I’m not obsessive about returns and I don’t think needle exchanges should be as focused on them as most seem to be.

But we live in the real world, a world where people become really angry when someone dumps used works near their home/school/shop/park. Because of this exchanges come under pressure to limit the equipment they give out.

In this article I’ll cover a few good ways of increasing your returns to keep both your commissioners and community happy.

Now updated with 'Needle Amnesty', thanks to Allison for reminding me.
